    A Method Non-Deterministic and Computationally Viable for Detecting Outliers in Large Datasets

    This paper presents an outlier detection method that is based on a Variable Precision Rough Set Model (VPRSM). This method generalizes the standard set inclusion relation, which is the foundation of the Rough Sets Basic Model (RSBM). The main contribution of this research is an improvement in the quality of detection because this generalization allows us to classify when there is some degree of uncertainty. From the proposed method, a computationally viable algorithm for large volumes of data is also introduced. The experiments performed in a real scenario and a comparison of the results with the RSBM-based method demonstrate the efficiency of both the method and the algorithm in diverse contexts that involve large volumes of data.This work has been supported by grant TIN2016-78103-C2-2-R, and University of Alicante projects GRE14-02 and Smart University

    Digoxin is a potent inhibitor of Bunyamwera virus infection in cell culture

    Drug repurposing is a valuable source of new antivirals because many compounds used to treat a variety of pathologies can also inhibit viral infections. In this work, we have tested the antiviral capacity of four repurposed drugs to treat Bunyamwera virus (BUNV) infection in cell cultures. BUNV is the prototype of the Bunyavirales order, a large group of RNA viruses that includes important pathogens for humans, animals and plants. Mock- and BUNV-infected Vero and HEK293T cells were treated with non-toxic concentrations of digoxin, cyclosporin A, sunitinib and chloroquine. The four drugs inhibited BUNV infection with varying potency in Vero cells, and all except sunitinib also in HEK293T cells, with digoxin rendering the lowest half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50). Since digoxin rendered the best results, we selected this drug for a more detailed study. Digoxin is an inhibitor of the Na+/K+ ATPase, a plasma membrane enzyme responsible for the energy-dependent exchange of cytoplasmic Na+ for extracellular K+ in mammalian cells and involved in many signaling pathways. Digoxin was shown to act at an early time point after viral entry reducing the expression of the viral proteins Gc and N. Effects on the cell cycle caused by BUNV and digoxin were also analyzed. In Vero cells, digoxin favored the transition from G1 phase of the cell cycle to S phase, an effect that might contribute to the anti-BUNV effect of digoxin in this cell type. Transmission electron microscopy showed that digoxin impedes the assembly of the characteristic spherules that harbor the BUNV replication complexes and the morphogenesis of new viral particles. Both BUNV and digoxin induce similar changes in the morphology of mitochondria that become more electron-dense and have swollen cristae. The alterations of this essential organelle might be one of the factors responsible for digoxin-induced inhibition of viral infection. Digoxin did not inhibit BUNV infection in BHK-21 cells that have a digoxin-resistant Na+/K+ ATPase which suggests that the effects of the blockade of this enzyme is a key factor of the antiviral activity of digoxin in BUNV-infected Vero cells

    Visceral origin: an underestimated source of neck pain

    The diagnosis of neck pain is challenging. Many visceral disorders are known tocause it, and clinical practice guidelines recommend to rule them out during neck pain diagnosis.However, the absence of suspicion of any cause impedes one from establishing that specific aetiology asthe final diagnosis. To investigate the degree of consideration given to visceral aetiology, a systematicsearch of trials about neck pain was carried out to evaluate their selection criteria. The search yielded309 eligible articles, which were screened by two independent reviewers. The PEDro scale score wasused to assess the methodological quality of the studies. The following information was retrieved:number of authors affiliated to a clinical or non-clinical institution, number of citations in the Webof Science, study aims, characteristics of participants, and eligibility criteria. The top 15 most citedtrials, and the 15 most recent studies about treatment efficacy in neck pain, published in first quartilejournals of the Journal Citation Reports, were selected. Females represented 67.5% of participants.A single study was of poor methodological quality (4/10). Based on the eligibility criteria of thearticles that were systematically reviewed, it would appear that visceral aetiology was not consideredin eighty percent of the trials on neck pain, showing a low level of suspicion both in research andclinical settings

    Application of the Variable Precision Rough Sets Model to Estimate the Outlier Probability of Each Element

    In a data mining process, outlier detection aims to use the high marginality of these elements to identify them by measuring their degree of deviation from representative patterns, thereby yielding relevant knowledge. Whereas rough sets (RS) theory has been applied to the field of knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) since its formulation in the 1980s; in recent years, outlier detection has been increasingly regarded as a KDD process with its own usefulness. The application of RS theory as a basis to characterise and detect outliers is a novel approach with great theoretical relevance and practical applicability. However, algorithms whose spatial and temporal complexity allows their application to realistic scenarios involving vast amounts of data and requiring very fast responses are difficult to develop. This study presents a theoretical framework based on a generalisation of RS theory, termed the variable precision rough sets model (VPRS), which allows the establishment of a stochastic approach to solving the problem of assessing whether a given element is an outlier within a specific universe of data. An algorithm derived from quasi-linearisation is developed based on this theoretical framework, thus enabling its application to large volumes of data. The experiments conducted demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm, whose usefulness is contextualised by comparison to different algorithms analysed in the literature.This work has been supported by University of Alicante projects GRE14-02 and Smart University

    Algorithm for the detection of outliers based on the theory of rough sets

    Outliers are objects that show abnormal behavior with respect to their context or that have unexpected values in some of their parameters. In decision-making processes, information quality is of the utmost importance. In specific applications, an outlying data element may represent an important deviation in a production process or a damaged sensor. Therefore, the ability to detect these elements could make the difference between making a correct and an incorrect decision. This task is complicated by the large sizes of typical databases. Due to their importance in search processes in large volumes of data, researchers pay special attention to the development of efficient outlier detection techniques. This article presents a computationally efficient algorithm for the detection of outliers in large volumes of information. This proposal is based on an extension of the mathematical framework upon which the basic theory of detection of outliers, founded on Rough Set Theory, has been constructed. From this starting point, current problems are analyzed; a detection method is proposed, along with a computational algorithm that allows the performance of outlier detection tasks with an almost-linear complexity. To illustrate its viability, the results of the application of the outlier-detection algorithm to the concrete example of a large database are presented.This work was performed as part of the Smart University Project (SmartUniversity2014) financed by the University of Alicante

    Crowd Monitoring in Smart Destinations Based on GDPR-Ready Opportunistic RF Scanning and Classification of WiFi Devices to Identify and Classify Visitors’ Origins

    Crowd monitoring was an essential measure to deal with over-tourism problems in urban destinations in the pre-COVID era. It will play a crucial role in the pandemic scenario when restarting tourism and making destinations safer. Notably, a Destination Management Organisation (DMO) of a smart destination needs to deploy a technological layer for crowd monitoring that allows data gathering in order to count visitors and distinguish them from residents. The correct identification of visitors versus residents by a DMO, while privacy rights (e.g., Regulation EU 2016/679, also known as GDPR) are ensured, is an ongoing problem that has not been fully solved. In this paper, we describe a novel approach to gathering crowd data by processing (i) massive scanning of WiFi access points of the smart destination to find SSIDs (Service Set Identifier), as well as (ii) the exposed Preferred Network List (PNL) containing the SSIDs of WiFi access points to which WiFi-enabled mobile devices are likely to connect. These data enable us to provide the number of visitors and residents of a crowd at a given point of interest of a tourism destination. A pilot study has been conducted in the city of Alcoi (Spain), comparing data from our approach with data provided by manually filled surveys from the Alcoi Tourist Info office, with an average accuracy of 83%, thus showing the feasibility of our policy to enrich the information system of a smart destination.This research was carried out within the research Project Alcoi Tourist Lab framework, co-funded by the Alcoi City Council & the Valencian Innovation Agency.     The CSN3 subunit of the COP9 signalosome interacts with the HD region of Sos1 regulating stability of this GEF protein

    Sos1 is an universal, widely expressed Ras guanine nucleotide-exchange factor (RasGEF) in eukaryotic cells. Its N-terminal HD motif is known to be involved in allosteric regulation of Sos1 GEF activity through intramolecular interaction with the neighboring PH domain. Here, we searched for other cellular proteins also able to interact productively with the Sos1 HD domain. Using a yeast two-hybrid system, we identified the interaction between the Sos1 HD region and CSN3, the third component of the COP9 signalosome, a conserved, multi-subunit protein complex that functions in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway to control degradation of many cellular proteins. The interaction of CSN3 with the HD of Sos1 was confirmed in vitro by GST pull-down assays using truncated mutants and reproduced in vivo by co-immunoprecipitation with the endogenous, full-length cellular Sos1 protein. In vitro kinase assays showed that PKD, a COP9 signalosome-associated-kinase, is able to phosphorylate Sos1. The intracellular levels of Sos1 protein were clearly diminished following CSN3 or PKD knockdown. A sizable fraction of the endogenous Sos1 protein was found ubiquitinated in different mammalian cell types. A significant reduction of RasGTP formation upon growth factor stimulation was also observed in CSN3-silenced as compared with control cells. Our data suggest that the interaction of Sos1 with the COP9 signalosome and PKD plays a significant role in maintenance of cellular Sos1 protein stability and homeostasis under physiological conditions and raises the possibility of considering the CSN/PKD complex as a potential target for design of novel therapeutic drugs.We thank R Brent for the pJG45-HeLa library and R.     Dendronized Anionic Gold Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Characterization and Antiviral Activity

    Anionic carbosilane dendrons decorated with sulfonate functions and with a thiol moiety at the focal point have been used to synthesize water soluble gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by direct reaction of dendrons, gold precursor and reducing agent in water and also by place-exchange reaction. These nanoparticles have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV, elemental analysis, and Z potential. Also, the interacting ability of the anionic sulfonate functions was investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) using copper(II) as a probe. It was found that the different structures and conformations of the AuNPs modulate the availability of sulfonate and thiol groups to be complexed by copper(II). Toxicity assays of AuNPs showed that those produced by direct reaction were less toxic than those obtained by ligand exchange.     MMW FM-CW ground-based SAR

    This paper presents the design of two ground based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) systems working at 94 and 300 GHz respectively. Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) technique is used for both systems, being described in the first section. Afterwards the first design at 94GHz is presented, explaining its geometry of exploration and describing the architecture of the W-band radar setup. Regarding the integrated receiver system, two models of low noise (LNA) and medium power amplifiers are disclosed, presenting noise figure and S parameters curves comprising frequencies between 75 and 110 GHz (W-band). Finally the second radar setup working at 300GHz is presented, depicting the hardware block diagram and explaining the main performance parameters of the system

    The origin and collapse of rock glaciers during the Bølling-Allerød interstadial: A new study case from the Cantabrian Mountains (Spain)

    .During the Late Pleistocene, the main mountain ranges of the Iberian Peninsula were covered by small icefields and cirque and alpine glaciers. The deglaciation triggered paraglacial processes that generated landforms, mostly within the ice-free glacial cirques. In this research we analyse the deglaciation process in the Muxivén Cirque (42°15′N – 6°16′W), in the upper Sil River Basin, which includes some of the largest relict rock glaciers of the Cantabrian Mountains. We addressed this objective by means of accurate geomorphological reconstructions, sedimentological analysis, Schmidt-hammer surface weathering measurements and a dataset of 10 10Be Cosmic-Ray Exposure ages. Results reveal that after ~16 ka, glaciers retreated to the bottom of the cirques at the headwaters of the valley, leaving the walls free of ice and triggering rock avalanches onto the remnants of these glaciers. This paraglacial process supplied debris to a small glacier within Muxivén Cirque, which transformed in two rock glaciers. These debris isolated the ice inside the rock glaciers only for a very short period of time and ended up melting completely before the Younger Dryas. The lower sector of the largest one stabilized at 14.5 ± 1.5 ka, while the upper sector remained active until 13.5 ± 0.8 ka. Previous to the stabilization of the lower sector of the northern rock glacier, at its margin a high-energy debris avalanche occurred at ~14.0 ± 0.9 ka. These data agree with previous research, corroborating the paraglacial origin of most Iberian rock glaciers during the Bølling-Allerød interstadial.S
